Biographical / Historical

Childbirth and Parent Education, Inc. of Kansas City (CAPE) was a not-for-profit corporation organized for the purpose of providing education, training, and knowledge to parents and expectant parents through Pavlov-Lamaze childbirth preparation classes. Classes were instructed by certified affiliates of Childbirth Without Pain Education League, Inc., a volunteer organization founded by mothers who studied Dr. Fernand Lamaze and used his psychoprophylaxis method of childbirth preparation and pain management in their births.

CAPE operated with a strong emphasis on providing parents-to-be with knowledge of options and valued clarification information as a way of making decisions concerning childbirth. Small groups of no more than seven couples attended classes in home or occasional hospital sessions prior to or early in pregnancy. At the beginning of the seventh month, couples attended seven childbirth education classes.

CAPE was governed by a parent board of directors and offered ways for parents to stay involved with the organization after birth.
